Grain Eyewear is a new company aimed at creating high quality, handcrafted sunglasses and prescription eyewear, using unique and responsibly sourced materials from around the world. As Grain Eyewear's lead designer, I am responsible for creating new frame designs, developing fabrication methods, and interfacing with manufacturers and suppliers.
In the summer of 2015, Stuart Morris approached me with the idea of making high-quality wooden sunglasses. Together we created Grain Eyewear, and since then we have been steadily working towards creating a line of sunglasses and prescription eyewear. We primarily use biodegradable cellulose acetate for the frame and exotic woods for the temples, but we would like to include a variety of creative and experimental materials.
Designing eyewear is intrinsically tied to keeping a watchful eye the coming and going waves of fashion, studying classic frame styles, and continuously playing with geometry. New frame designs start out as roughly drawn hand sketches, which are then refined on Adobe Illustrator and drafted to produce a prototype.
As lead designer for Grain Eyewear I am responsible for creating every new frame design and optimizing the production process of the units.
